Whiston (St. Mary Magdalene) Churchyard Lancaster W4244 with squadron markings of QR-F on a “Gardening” (laying of sea mines) mission. Airborne at 1730 from Syerston the mining area was codenamed “Elderberry”, which was in the Bay of Biscay off the French town of Bayonne. The aircraft encountered extremely poor visibility on return and following a misjudged approach to Exeter, crashed at Diamonds Farm, Clyst Honiton, Devon killing all on board. Overloon War Cemetery Killed in action near Oploo during the battle for Overloon in Holland. Ronald Shingleton (C/JX 167932) Royal Navy - H.M.S. Niger - Able Seaman 6 July 1942, aged 23 Son of Thomas and Elizabeth Shingleton. Chatham Naval Memorial During the return to Britain of convoy QP 13, HMS Niger led a column of merchantmen in bad weather with visibility reduced to one mile. HMS Niger had been unable to take bearings due to the weather but made a sighting of land, which was in fact an iceberg. She had unfortunately led the convoy into a British minefield off Iceland. She was mined at 22.40 hours in position 66º35'N, 23º14'W as were six of the merchants she was escorting, all but one also sank.
