After bombing the target the aircraft was seen to have an engine on fire and crashed at La Chapelle des Fougeretz. Pilot officer Angus attempted to bail out of the aircraft, but did not survive.

The aircraft was specially equipment with radio counter measures and was on a Jostle sortie jamming the German radar defences. It was believed shot down by Hauptmann Johannes Hager flying in Me 110 G4.

Stirling mk IV serial number EF298 coded V8-T, on re-supply mission to Arnhem one of at least four squadron aircraft were shot down in the Drop Zone that afternoon. EF298 was hit by flak during the dropping sequence and the aircraft turned away from the DZ but crashed very shortly afterward in the woods near Panoramahoeve near Wolfheze / Renkum with loss of all 6 crew & 2 RASC despatchers.

One of 20 aircraft up at 16:20 hours to Fede Fjord, three Beaufighters failed to return, two reported lost to flak during the attack and the third was shot down by enemy fighters which attempted to intercept the force after the attack. It was NV182 which was hot down by fighters at Flekkefjord/Brevigen Bay.

The aircraft failed to return, and it was found the next day crashed into a hill on the southern tip of the Mull of Kintyre, Scotland. All the crew were killed. It is believed the aircraft became lost and that owing to low cloud was probably flying low when it crashed.

Practice forced landings. 5 (P)AFU (RAF Tern Hill, Shropshire). Miles Master I (T8486) crashed at Holmer Farm, Stirchley (at map reference 706066 in modern-day Telford), at 14.30 hrs. After allowing his pupil pilot to carry out a practice forced landing outside the allocated low-flying area, the instructor then let the pupil descend too low before opening up the throttles to climb away and the aircraft struck some high tension power cables and crashed. The instructor pilot – Edwin Fairclough – was killed and the pilot under training survived.

Lost when the destroyer HMS Laforey was sunk in the Mediterranean. On 29 March 1944 the German submarine U-223 was located by ASDIC on a destroyer. The U-boat was heavily depth-charged, but managed to carry out many evasive manoeuvres in an attempt to evade destruction. In the early morning on 30 March, the U-boat was forced to surface and was attacked by the destroyers with gunfire, by destroyers. Shortly before being sunk, U-223 fired a Gnat torpedo and hit HMS Laforey, which sank about 60 nautical miles northeast of Palermo, Sicily, Italy in position 38º54'N, 14º18'E. Among the 189 who lost their lives was the Commanding Officer of Laforey and the 14th Flotilla.

Ventura serial number FP543 coded S airborne from Gambut at 08:40 on a radar training flight in the newly arrived Ventura. To assist in the use of the ASD radar, the captain had taken with him, as well as his standard crew, one of the Squadron radar technicians. When they had not returned after the aircraft’s limit of endurance, two other Squadron Venturas and a B-25 from the nearby USAAF unit began a search. Wreckage of the missing aircraft was eventually sighted by one of the Venturas, the broken remains were strewn on a beach near a wrecked ship at Cape Azzaz, some 30 miles north-east of Gambut.

At 23.54 hours on 10 Dec 1941, U-130 fired a spread of four torpedoes at the convoy SC-57 west of Rockall and observed two hits on one ship, the Star of Luxor, which sank in flames. At 23.57 hours, a spread of two torpedoes was then fired, both torpedoes seemingly detonating on one ship, but in fact Kurdistan and Kirnwood were hit. Seven crew members, one gunner and two naval staff members were lost. The master, the commodore, four naval staff members, 45 crew members and five gunners were picked up by HMS Kingcup (K 33) and landed at Londonderry.

Blenheim mk IV serial number V5825 coded YH-R airborne from Watton, Suffolk to attacht the docks at Rotterdam. Originally taken off at 14:45 but for some reason were recalled and took off later in the afternoon. Of the 18 Blenheims in the raid, one crashed on take off and seven others were lost during the attack between 19:55 and 20:25. V5825 crashed in the target area after ebing shot down by a ME109 of VI/JG53.

Practice forced landings. 5 (P)AFU (RAF Tern Hill, Shropshire). Miles Master I (T8486) crashed at Holmer Farm, Stirchley (at map reference 706066 in modern-day Telford), at 14.30 hrs. After allowing his pupil pilot to carry out a practice forced landing outside the allocated low-flying area, the instructor then let the pupil descend too low before opening up the throttles to climb away and the aircraft struck some high tension power cables and crashed. The instructor pilot – Edwin Fairclough – was killed and the pilot under training survived.

Lost when the destroyer HMS Laforey was sunk in the Mediterranean. On 29 March 1944 the German submarine U-223 was located by ASDIC on a destroyer. The U-boat was heavily depth-charged, but managed to carry out many evasive manoeuvres in an attempt to evade destruction. In the early morning on 30 March, the U-boat was forced to surface and was attacked by the destroyers with gunfire, by destroyers. Shortly before being sunk, U-223 fired a Gnat torpedo and hit HMS Laforey, which sank about 60 nautical miles northeast of Palermo, Sicily, Italy in position 38º54'N, 14º18'E. Among the 189 who lost their lives was the Commanding Officer of Laforey and the 14th Flotilla.

Ventura serial number FP543 coded S airborne from Gambut at 08:40 on a radar training flight in the newly arrived Ventura. To assist in the use of the ASD radar, the captain had taken with him, as well as his standard crew, one of the Squadron radar technicians. When they had not returned after the aircraft’s limit of endurance, two other Squadron Venturas and a B-25 from the nearby USAAF unit began a search. Wreckage of the missing aircraft was eventually sighted by one of the Venturas, the broken remains were strewn on a beach near a wrecked ship at Cape Azzaz, some 30 miles north-east of Gambut.

At 23.54 hours on 10 Dec 1941, U-130 fired a spread of four torpedoes at the convoy SC-57 west of Rockall and observed two hits on one ship, the Star of Luxor, which sank in flames. At 23.57 hours, a spread of two torpedoes was then fired, both torpedoes seemingly detonating on one ship, but in fact Kurdistan and Kirnwood were hit. Seven crew members, one gunner and two naval staff members were lost. The master, the commodore, four naval staff members, 45 crew members and five gunners were picked up by HMS Kingcup (K 33) and landed at Londonderry.

Of the 18 Blenheims in the raid, one crashed on take off and seven others were lost during the attack between 19:55 and 20:25. V5825 crashed in the target area after ebing shot down by a ME109 of VI/JG53.
