Serjeant Ellin was standing by the side of a road with his bicycle when he was stuck by a US Army lorry which was towing another lorry. The inquest reached a verdict of accidental death and the lorry driver was exonerated. Moston (St. Joseph's) Roman Catholic Cemetery Armstrong Whitworth Whitley P5092 of No19 Operational Training Unit took off from RAF Kinloss for a night bombing exercise over the Innes Links bombing range in Lossiemouth, Scotland, the crew all being from No36 Course. At around midnight eye witnesses saw debris falling from the sky over the bombing range. At daybreak the bulk of the wreckage was found near Innes House, the aircraft having broken into two sections. The cause of the crash was put down to the photoflash exploding. Minturno War Cemetery Died in Italy during the crossing of the River Garigliano and push towards Minturno. Dordrecht General Cemetery Spitfire mk XVI serial RR236 from B.79 Woensdrecht takeoff at 10:25 hrs for an armed recce operation to Alblasserdam in Zuid-Holland possibly encountered flak and crashed 10:45 hrs at Polder Zuidzijde, Oud-Alblas, Zuid-Holland. Bergen-Op-Zoom Canadian War Cemetery Lancaster mk I serial number ED761 coded DX-Z airborne from Scampton at 21:49 on a mission to Berlin, crashed at Waverveen Jack Hartley Rodgers (67593) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve - 18 Sqdn. - Pilot Officer 16 September 1941, aged 25 Son of John W. and Ada E. Rodgers, of Sheffield. Runnymede Memorial Blenheim mk IV serial number V6339 coded WV-C airborne from Horsham St Faith at 12:30 on an anti-shipping sortie on a Squealer patrol Beat B, crashed into the sea. (A Squealer beat was against German trawlers which were equipped with intelligence-gathering equipment, listening to radio frequencies) Donald Vivian Roebuck Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve - H.M.S. Victorious - Sub-Lt (A) 30 April 1945, aged 23 Son of Frank and Doris Mildred Roebuck; Husband of Constance Mary Roebuck, of Grenoside, Yorkshire. Lee-On-Solent Memorial Whilst attacking oil installations in Java and Sumatra in January 1945, Roebuck's aircraft was shot down and he managed to bale out. He was taken prisoner by the Japanese and died in captivity. There are reports that he was one of the so called 'Palemberg Nine' that were reported to have been held in Changi Gaol and were executed on or after the date of surrender of Japan, although the exact events are unclear. Thomas Sagar (2351604) Royal Corps of Signals - Signalman 25 November 1941, aged 28 Son of John and Roseanna Sagar; Husband of Cicely Sagar, of Darfield, Yorkshire. Alamein Memorial Died during the North African Campaign, a week after the launch of Operation Crusader, which ultimately was successful in breaking the siege of Tobruk Cyril Leslie Leonhard Sherbrooke (169551) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve - 153 Sqdn. - Pilot Officer 26 November 1943, aged 34 Son of Charles Leonard Sherbrooke, and of Annie Sherbrooke, of Preston, Lancashire.
