Halifax mk III serial MZ572 coded LK-L airborne from Burn at 23:57 on a mission to Bottrop. Possibly shot down by Fw. Edwin Egeler of 12/NJG1, the night fighters chased the bomber stream over the Dutch coast and may have been exceeded over the North Sea between 25-60 km west of Den Haag with the combat taking place at 02:16 hrs at 2,000 feet.

Portsmouth Naval Memorial
Lost when the destroyer HMS Laforey was sunk in the Mediterranean. On 29 March 1944 the German submarine U-223 was located by ASDIC on a destroyer. The U-boat was heavily depth-charged, but managed to carry out many evasive manoeuvres in an attempt to evade destruction. In the early morning on 30 March, the U-boat was forced to surface and was attacked by the destroyers with gunfire, by destroyers. Shortly before being sunk, U-223 fired a Gnat torpedo and hit HMS Laforey, which sank about 60 nautical miles northeast of Palermo, Sicily, Italy in position 38º54'N, 14º18'E. Among the 189 who lost their lives was the Commanding Officer of Laforey and the 14th Flotilla.

Mosquito FB mk VI serial RF779, airborne from St Thomas Mount, dived into ground during dive bombing practice. Crashed in the course of a formation shallow dive-bombing display on 2 July, 28 miles North of Bangalore. Sadly, the pilot W/O Kenneth Webster misjudged the pullout and the aircraft disintegrated on impact with the ground. Webster and his Nav F/Sgt Hopes both died. They too were accorded full military honours the next day at Bangalore Military Cemetery and rest today in Madras War Cemetery.

Lancaster mk II serial HR862 coded TL-X airborne from Graveley at 21:28 on an operation to attack the rocket research facility at Peenemunde, and crashed near Greifwald after being targeted by radar predicted flak. Two members of the crew were taken POW and five were killed.
