Bygland Churchyard
Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress mk C serial number AN525 coded WP-D airborne from Polebrook at 09:15 on a mission to Olso. Shortly before noon the Fortress, was attacked by a Luftwaffe Messerschmitt fighter (Me.109T). The pilot, Ltn. (Pilot Officer) Jakobi, was making his initial contact with the new American bomber and was anxious to be the first to register kill on behalf of his unit. As he and another German fighter zeroed in on the Fortress they were met by a hail of cannon fire from AN525. The attackers turned tail but only momentarily, Ltn. Jakobi, whose aircraft had been hit on the right wing, returned to the attack D-Dog and then he was joined by Lt. Steinicke. It was 11:27 a.m. and this time Jakobi hit his target. Almost immediately AN525 burst into flames, but not before the Fort's gunners shot down one of the Me.109s. The Fortress plummeted wildly downward, were they trying to extinguish the flames or had it lost control? There was no indication that the pilot had been wounded or was already dead. No parachutes were seen escaping from the Flying Fortress. Although no explosion was seen from the air, investigators later confirmed that it crashed in a mountainous region near Bygland, Norway, killing all on board.
