Stirling IV serial LK276 crashed at Newton Field near Great Dunmow. This crew was being checked by an experienced pilot and was engaged in a night glider towing sortie. The glider; Horsa PF573 was cast off and landed safely and the Stirling was then flown to the rope dropping area before the pilot asked for permission to land. Having been told to hold off, the crew began to orbit the outer circle of lights but shortly afterwards, the aircraft crashed, having struck some willow trees, passed beneath overhead power lines and skidded along the ground before striking a bank and exploding. The Board of Inquiry blamed the pilot for failing to monitor his altimeter and concentrating on acquiring the lights after he had lost them. There is an account which suggests that the aircraft was shot down by an enemy night intruder, which was seen to be following the Stirling.
