Believed to have bailed out in error of Hampden AE319 airborne from Scampton on a 'gardening' mission
The account of Squadron Leader Freddie Newall, an 83 Squadron flight commander, of his experience in AE155 on 18/19 August 1941 highlights the state of confusion that an encounter with cumulo-nimbus clouds (thunder – storm cloud) could create. Turbulence in the cloud became so violent that the Hampden was thrown about as though it were a toy, being turned onto its back and losing height from 16,000 feet to 1,600 feet before, after a series of desperate manoeuvres, Freddie was able to regain control. The immense feeling of relief at being back in command of the aircraft turned into one of bewilderment when, after calling up his crew members on the intercom, he received no reply from the navigator. The reason for this lack of response became apparent after the wireless operator had crawled up to the nose of the aircraft to find that there was no sign of him. Exactly what caused the navigator to leave the aircraft will never be known. It is possible that his intercom became disconnected as Freddie balled to control the Hampden so that when he called up his pilot he received no reply and being under the impression that the other crew members had already baled out the navigator followed suit. The circumstances of his departure from the aircraft may be something of a mystery; the outcome was that the unfortunate navigator, Pilot Officer James Gould, who was himself a pilot, lies in Kiel war Cemetery. Whether he actually had his parachute on, if he did whether it failed to open, or whether he baled out normally and then landed in the sea and drowned are other unanswered questions.
