HMS Dasher was an escort aircraft carrier which sank in 460 feet of water in the Firth of Clyde, south of the Little Cumbrae, and between Brodick on the island of Arran, and Ardrossan on the mainland. The vessel was engaged in deck landing exercises, during which an aviation gasoline explosion is believed to have taken place, resulting in the rapid sinking of the vessel, and the loss of 379 crew. No absolute cause for the explosions was determined at the time, which left only 149 survivors from a complement of 528.

Probably a casualty on SS Anselm. In the morning of 5 July 1941, U-96 was pursuing a convoy contact report from a Condor aircraft through fog about 300 miles north of the Azores when the she came upon a curious formation of six vessels: the British survey vessel HMS Challenger (J 98), leading the troopship Anselm, the armed merchant cruiser HMS Cathay (F 05) and three corvettes, HMS Petunia (K 79), HMS Lavender (K 60) and HMS Starwort (K 20) which were deployed to port, starboard and astern of the troopship. At 08.29 hours, U-96 fired a salvo of four torpedoes and thought that she had scored hits on the AMC and a yacht (the survey ship). However, two torpedoes hit the Anselm, sinking her within 22 minutes, but that was time enough for the crew to launch all but one of the lifeboats. Nonetheless, four crew members and 250 of the service personnel on board were lost.

Royal Naval Patrol Service - H.M. Trawler Rosemonde.
22 January 1942, aged 25
on memorial as Eric Tootle
Lowestoft Naval Memorial
On 13 January 1942 HMS Rosemonde left Milford Haven en route to Gibraltar together with the minesweeping trawlers HMS Rosalind and HMS Lord Grey but lost them in stormy weather on 15 January. While the other trawlers arrived at Gibraltar on 22 January, the Admiralty reported HMS Rosemonde as missing and considered lost after the limit of her endurance was reached on 27 January. At about 23.00 hours on 19 January U-581 attacked what was believed to be a British corvette of some 800 tons steering towards Gibraltar during an extremely dark night with limited visibility due to rain about 400 miles east of the Azores. A first torpedo fired from about 600 yards missed, but then one of spread of two torpedoes struck the vessel amidships and caused it to break in two and sink within one minute, followed by an underwater explosion presumably caused by depth charges. The U-boat searched the vicinity of the sinking for some considerable period, but found no survivors or wreckage. It is very likely that HMS Rosemonde was sunk in this attack.
